Nicholas Prior Photography

I'm coming back this weekend with some great lighting posts. For now, I'm leaving you with a few images from Nicholas Prior, who is my favorite photographer. These photographs are part of his "Age of Man" Collection and they are intended to evoke a sense of awkward nostalgia in the observers. Children are the central focus in the "Age of Man" Collection and seem completely out of touch in the adult-dominated world that is portrayed in the series. This intentional awkwardness depicts the dark, yet realistic idea that adults cannot identify with a child's world, as they once may have been able to. Furthermore, the child subjects in the images refuse to let the adults know what they are thinking and the apparent disconnect almost seems like a psychological stalemate or a mutual understanding of irreconcilable differences. I like that these pictures use the backdrop of small New England towns, too; it is the perfect setting, in my opinion. I also think it's cool that the audience becomes a casual viewer to an awkward moment that perhaps they should not be seeing. I can't help but feel like an intruder when I see these photographs. The most famous image from the collection is this one where two adults stand talking to each other in Halloween masks, while a child stands around the corner, seemingly unaware of the masked men. This image was used as the album cover for Brand New's CD that came out in 2006.
