LED Street Lamps are coming to America...once the recession is over. With towns and cities strapped for cash, the initial investment is not compatible with budget cutting town planning. However, at double the price, the return would be significant-LED White Street Lamps last for over 60,000 hours, nearly 4-5 times as long as regular incandescent or mercury street lights. Furthermore, LED Street lamps in the Japanese city Osaka Prefecture, have yielded an average savings of 88% in electricity bills compared to the preexisting Mercury lights. If this isn't enough, the white LED Street lamps are extremely appealing, giving off a powerful whitish, bluish appearance. From an urban development perspective, the brighter lighting may even help to curb crime in troubled areas and create more night-life friendly communities.
According to the Lighting Trends blog, New York City's department of transportation has currently rolled out a trial program testing the LED lamps in select locations. If the program goes well, the rest of the 300,000 street lights in New York City will be converted to white LED. The lamps maximize the amount of light pointed downwards, and minimize the lighting pollution going upwards. More efficient, less polluting, less costly, and more aesthetically appealing; these are the street lights we will see in the future, you can bet on it.
