Red Sox great Luis Tiant, who led the Sox to the 1975 World Series, now is the star of one of the most popular independent films in the world right now. The subject of the film-his life; the setting of the film-Cuba, 45 years after he defected to the United States to pursue his dream of baseball. Apparently, the film follows him on his return to Cuba where he is reunited with his family and friends for the first time in decades. The film also really captures the overall love of baseball in Cuba. As one writer insists, "What baseball has given Cuba - a frivolous escape for young boys and a global respect for its long-dominant national teams."
I really like the scene where a large group unsuspecting Cubans are arguing about who the best Cuban pitcher to ever play was, and one guy says Luis Tiant. The group is unaware that Tiant is standing right next to them the whole time; once they realize it, they all want to shake his hand.
Check out this trailer. It definitely must have been easy to make a movie about Tiant's life, quite the story.
