I didn't report it on the blog but yesterday, the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority shut down the Blue, purple and white LED Lights on the Zakim Bridge. They cited budget restraints and the ailing economy as the reason for shutting them down, as the bridge's electric bill costs nearly $5,000 a month. However, just today, the Zakim Bridge architect, a man named Miguel Rosales, sent a $15,000 check to the MTA to turn the lights back on! Rosales hopes the gift will inspire charitable Bostonians to donate for the cause of keeping the beautiful lights operating even during this recession. Without the lighting, the gateway effect of the swooping blue and white LEDs is non-existent. Rosales insisted in an interview, "it just brings to life the whole structure at night...turning the lights off...makes it an even more depressing situation." So, I applaud Miguel Rosales and his efforts here because without the lighting, it is depressing and it really sends the wrong message. So, let there be light!Source: Boston.com
