Music Tuesday

Songs that I've been listening to for the past week:

Phoenix-Lisztomania

Manchester Orchestra-Colly Strings

Jay Z-In My Lifetime

Tsi Tsi Fly

So I left my job- there was nothing that could have prevented it and there was nothing to keep me there anymore. I honestly think that the corporate world is full of these people that are slaves to their own greed, people who see their subordinates only as money, and they squeeze and squeeze more and more productivity out of the people that they order around, until they sufficiently suck the life out of those they order around.

I would love to say that I left in a blaze of glory but truthfully, I was really forced out when I decided that I didn't want to play the game anymore. I would have given anything to tell them the truth throughout the whole ordeal, which is that I felt under appreciated, disrespected, under-compensated and over-worked. So I like to break it down like this:

1) job-what I was doing, a job is when someone works from 9-5 everyday with the sole purpose of earning a paycheck. A job is a means for producing a livelihood, but there is no intrinsic value to it at all. Much of this is characterized by emptiness.
2) Career- taking pride in accomplishments and achievements (i.e. getting a raise/promotion). Most people tend to have careers.
3) Calling- A true passion, working in a field that evokes mental satisfaction without regards to financial compensation. This is extremely rare.

So hitting on that last point, I have quit my job and decided to pursue a career in urban planning, in the hope that this is a true calling. I know that as I move forward with this, I will feel so much better about what I am doing, more comfortable with myself, my future, my life. So this is my calling and as cliche and trite as this may sound, I am committed to making the world a better place through public service. I have not been this happy for over a year.

Music Monday-What's the name of this blog again?

Modest Mouse-3rd Planet. Great band!

Brother Ali-Tight Rope. From his new album "Us." I dig this album 4/5 stars.

Brand New-Daisy. From their new album that came out last week. I have to admit that I am slightly disappointing with the album in general 3/5 stars. However, I dig songs like At the Bottom, Noro, Bought a Bride, You Stole etc.

Jay Z-Empire State of Mind. Off his new album "The Blueprint 3." This is probably my favorite rap album all year 5/5 stars. It sucks to plug such an Pro-NY song but I'll be the first to admit that the song is solid.

Taryn Simon's "The Innocents"

I was just watching this really cool ted.com talk by Taryn Simon, a photographer. Taryn is interested in filming and photographing what is considered to be "the Lost" or "The Unknown." Her work is about photographing places kept from the public eye, and secret locations previously unknown to the outside world. Her photographs range from a bear in hibernation to a nuclear waste storage facility in Washington. She has also just completed a project that she calls "The innocents," photographs of people wrongfully accused of crimes. She takes photos of the wrongfully accused at their alibi sites, at their arrest locations, or at the alleged crime scene. She also talks about how the police can create a suggestive array of photographs to displace true memories of the real criminal for the victim. Many of these people served over 20 years of a sentence before they were exonerated. My favorite is the first picture just below, taken of a man wrongfully accused of rape and murder shortly after he was drafted to play professional baseball for the Oakland A's. He went on to serve 18 years of a death sentence.
